Outcomes you can actually review.

A termly outcome is too big to mark in a week. Break it into the steps the child is working on, mark each one as it moves, and the review writes itself.

How steps work.

Each outcome on a plan can have steps beneath it. Steps are written for that child, in plain words, by the person who knows them. They can be edited at any time, because a step a child doesn't achieve usually needs to be smaller, not abandoned. Each step is marked achieved, partly achieved or not yet. Steps are a set, not a ladder: a child is usually working on several at once.

  • Partly achieved
  • Not yet

Where steps come from.

Write your own, or seed them from the free statutory frameworks:

  • The Engagement Model
  • The Pre-Key Stage Standards
  • Development Matters

If your school already uses a licensed assessment scheme, import your own steps from it; SENCO View doesn't ship anyone else's descriptors.

What it feeds.

Step progress rolls into the termly ISP review, the parent portal and the evidence pack, so progress is shown as a record of what was attempted and what moved, not a judgement written from memory.

What it replaces.

The small-steps tracking sheet, the separate assessment-scheme subscription used only for a handful of pupils, and the gap between the plan and the evidence.

Common questions about small steps.

Do we have to use steps on every outcome?
No. Steps are optional per outcome. Many outcomes don't need them.
Can we import our LA's provision expectations as steps?
Yes, the same way as any other framework, and only for the LAs you work with; nothing is pre-loaded nationally.
Is this an assessment scheme?
No. It's progress tracking against the child's own plan. It doesn't produce levels, scores or comparisons between children.
